Chris MathasChris Mathas is Butte Falls Charter School’s MacGyver. He can build or fix just about anything, and Chris loves to share his knowledge with BFCS students.

Students in his classes have built a small fleet of wooden boats from the ground up. This year students are converting a 24 foot Bayliner ski boat into a World War II P T Boat (including torpedo tubes). They’re also restoring a pontoon boat.

In the spring students will build bridges for an outdoor fitness course. But first the students will map the wetlands where the bridges will be installed, submit and secure a permit from the Department of Environmental Quality, cut the timber, mill it into lumber, then design, engineer and build the bridges, and install them on site.

That’s not all that goes on in the the BFCS shop. There’s even a corner for automobile mechanics and a 3-D printer that serves work stations where students do computer assisted design (CAD).

Learning through hands-on projects is a hallmark of a BFCS education.
