Caron NewmanEnglish teacher Caron Newman is in her first year teaching at BFCS. She came to Butte Falls from the Oregon coast.

“I had been teaching in Coquille for 27 years and I was ready for a change,” says Caron. “I came here because of the reputation of the Speech and Debate team, and because BFCS is such a strong supporter of Speech and Debate.” In addition to coaching the Speech and Debate team, Caron also teaches grades 7-12 English.

Caron likes the freedom offered in a charter school. “It’s less structured at BFCS. Time is more flexible,” she says.

She’s also drawn to the family-like atmosphere in the BFCS classrooms. “I like how the kids are so supportive of each other. They back each other up. Even the new kids fit in.”

Caron also notes that “kids who play on teams pressure their teammates to keep their grades up so they can play in the upcoming game.”

Coach Newman acknowledges the challenge she faces as the new coach of a well-regarded Speech and Debate team. Three seniors who went to last year’s national competition have graduated. “It’s a rebuilding year,” she says. “But we have a good foundation of returners and strong freshmen.”
